Tokyo Electron raises dividend, sets repurchase; shares fall 5.2%

The chip-equipment maker paid out more than it planned in July and set aside up to ¥150 billion for its own shares, but the stock dropped more than twice as much as the Nikkei 225.

Tokyo Electron shares closed at ¥9,514 (US$60.31) on Oct 30, down 5.19% from ¥10,035 the session before. The drop came on the day the Tokyo-listed maker of chip-making tools reported fiscal second-quarter results, raised its interim dividend above its July forecast and set aside up to ¥150 billion (about US$951 million) to repurchase its own shares.

The Nikkei 225, Tokyo’s main share index, lost 2.12% over the same session, so Tokyo Electron fell more than twice as far. No reason for the selling has been reported. In US dollar terms the stock lost 5.17%.

The results cover the second quarter of the fiscal year that ends in March 2027. Bloomberg reported on Oct 30 that the company’s outlook came in ahead of estimates, a result Bloomberg linked to growing spending on artificial intelligence. Demand for chips in the region has been strong: South Korea’s export value index for semiconductors (2020=100) stood at 733.03 in September 2026, up 29.42% from August and 268.08% from a year earlier. That index tracks the chip sales that Tokyo Electron’s tools help produce, not the company’s own orders.

A ¥415 dividend, above the July plan

The board set the interim dividend at ¥415 a share. That compares with these earlier figures:

This year Earlier figure
Interim dividend per share ¥415 ¥384 (July 30 forecast); ¥264 (a year earlier)
Total payout ¥188,396 million ¥121,363 million (a year earlier)

The total comes to about US$1.19 billion. It takes effect on November 27, 2026, for shareholders of record on September 30, 2026.

Tokyo Electron said it lifted the payment because first-half net income attributable to owners of the parent came in above the forecast it gave on July 30. Its stated policy is to pay out around 50% of that net income.

The ¥415 figure appears to apply to shares as they were held before the company’s 5-for-1 stock split on October 1, 2026. The total payout works out to about 454 million shares, roughly a fifth of the post-split share count. The release does not say this directly.

Up to ¥150 billion for its own shares

The board also approved a facility to repurchase as many as 25 million shares, or 1.1% of shares outstanding excluding treasury stock (shares the company already holds itself), for no more than ¥150 billion. Purchases may run from November 1, 2026, to March 31, 2027. They would be made on the Tokyo Stock Exchange under a discretionary trading contract, in which a broker decides the timing within the company’s limits.

Tokyo Electron cited its cash position and its plans for growth investment as the basis for the facility. It also said market conditions could mean that only part of the program is carried out, or none of it.

As of September 30, 2026, adjusted for the split, the company had 2,269,837,310 shares outstanding excluding treasury stock and held 70,326,355 treasury shares.

A slide of more than 23% since Oct 9

The Oct 30 drop deepened a decline that began earlier in the month. From Oct 9 to Oct 30, the stock lost 23.55% in yen and 23.42% in US dollars. Currency did little to change the picture for overseas holders: the yen moved from 158.025 to 157.76 per dollar over that time, a shift of 0.17%.

Because the Nikkei 225 is weighted by share price, large moves in Tokyo Electron weigh heavily on the index. Investors outside Japan can hold the company through Tokyo shares or other routes described in our guide to owning Japanese chip stocks.

The repurchase window opens on November 1. Tokyo Electron has not said how much of the ¥150 billion it expects to use, and the dividend is due to take effect on November 27.
