Micron drops 7%, then a Taiwan plant pause is reported
Two Micron Technology stories in two days: its steepest share fall since August, then a reported halt at a plant in Taiwan.
Micron Technology had two setbacks in two days. Its shares lost 7.0% in New York on Nov 4. On the evening of Nov 5, Seoul time, Bloomberg reported that the memory maker had stopped work on a US$4.5 billion plant in Taiwan.
The steepest fall since August, at twice the index’s pace
Micron closed at US$795.23 on Nasdaq on Nov 4. That was 7.0% below its Nov 3 close of US$855.10, a move over one session.
The drop was Micron’s largest in a single day since Aug 18, 2026. On that day it lost 7.02%, 54 sessions earlier.
Other chip stocks also lost ground, but by less. The PHLX Semiconductor Index (SOX) fell 3.13% over the same session. That is less than half of Micron’s decline.
Three US outlets wrote about the session, and each looked at it from its own angle.
Barron’s reported on Nov 4 that warnings about memory prices were piling up as Micron’s stock slid. The magazine tied those warnings to the Democrats’ success in the US election. Barron’s account links the concern over memory prices to the vote. It does not tie it to anything Micron itself said or reported.
MarketWatch reported that Micron dropped that day along with other chip stocks. In its account, the election outcome hurt hopes for data-center spending. MarketWatch called that spending central to the rally in chip shares. Data centers are the large server facilities that run AI and cloud services. MarketWatch’s reading points to the wider market mood, not to Micron alone.
CNBC listed Micron among the biggest movers at midday on Nov 4. That is CNBC’s roundup of the stocks moving most during the trading session. Micron shared the list with CoreWeave, Booking Holdings, McDonald’s and CVS Health. Those four companies come from very different businesses, so Micron’s place on the list reflects the size of its move that day.
Bloomberg reports a halt at a US$4.5 billion Taiwan site
On Nov 5, 2026, at 17:54 KST, Bloomberg reported that Micron had paused work on a US$4.5 billion plant in Taiwan. According to Bloomberg, the pause came after a labor dispute.
Reuters carried the report at 18:22 KST on Nov 5, about half an hour later. It cited Bloomberg News and did not confirm the report on its own. For now, Bloomberg is the only outlet the account rests on. The pause should be read as Bloomberg’s report, not as a settled fact.
The plant’s price tag can be set against Micron’s own size. In its latest reported quarter, Micron had revenue of US$54.229 billion and operating profit of US$43.751 billion. Operating profit is what the core business earns before interest and taxes. That quarter was the fourth quarter of Micron’s fiscal 2026, and it ended on Sept 3, 2026. So its quarters do not line up with the calendar quarters that Samsung Electronics and SK hynix report.
The Taiwan project, at US$4.5 billion, is a sizable outlay. Even so, it is a fraction of the revenue Micron reported for that one quarter. The report does not show how long the reported pause might last or what the labor dispute is about.
