TSMC falls to daily limit as Taiex sheds over 3,700 points

Taiwan's largest chipmaker hit the floor allowed for one session, adding to a fall of more than 9% between mid-October and November 4.

TSMC (2330) dropped to its daily price limit in early Taipei trading on Friday, November 6, 2026. Focus Taiwan reported the move at 10:40 a.m. Taipei time (11:40 a.m. in Seoul). By then the Taiex, the Taiwan Stock Exchange’s main index, was down more than 3,700 points.

The limit is the furthest a Taiwan-listed share may move in one session under the exchange’s daily trading rules. So before midday, TSMC had fallen as far as trading allowed. Its closing price for the day was not known by late morning.

Wall Street, Tokyo and Seoul set the tone

Focus Taiwan linked the drop in Taipei to heavy losses on Wall Street. It also pointed to sharp falls in Japanese and South Korean shares. The outlet set the slump against uncertainty over AI data center policies following the U.S. midterm elections.

TSMC and the Taiex tend to move together because of the company’s size in the index. Pacific Tape explains how TSMC shapes the Taiex and its daily moves. A limit-down move in the stock and a drop of thousands of points in the index on the same morning fit that link.

Korea’s memory makers were also under pressure that morning. The Korea Herald reported that Samsung Electronics and SK hynix slid as worries about AI data centers widened. CNBC reported that a slump on the Nasdaq hit chip stocks across Asia, with SK hynix and Samsung among those falling.

Not every report pointed the same way. The Seoul Economic Daily reported that Samsung and SK hynix expect only a modest effect from U.S. curbs on data centers. That view concerns the same policy worry Focus Taiwan cited. It was about the two Korean companies, not TSMC.

A slide that began in mid-October

Friday’s drop added to losses already in place. TSMC closed at NT$2,260 on November 4, about US$68.95 at 32.777 NT dollars per US dollar. That close was 1.53% below November 3. From October 13 to November 4, the shares lost 9.24%.

In US dollars the fall was steeper, at 11.55%. The NT dollar weakened 2.6% over the same weeks, from 31.945 to 32.777 per US dollar. Each share was therefore worth fewer dollars even before the local price is counted. For investors abroad who measure returns in US dollars, the currency added to the loss.

The slide ran through two weeks of company news. The stock closed at NT$2,385 on October 22, before Pacific Tape reported on TSMC’s CoPoS packaging push at Longtan. It closed at NT$2,425 on October 28, ahead of Pacific Tape’s report on TSMC’s takeover of AUO’s Taichung plant. From that October 28 level, the November 4 close was lower still. Friday’s limit-down move extended the decline further.

Sales still far above a year earlier

Taiwan-listed companies report revenue to the exchange every month. TSMC’s latest report covers September 2026. Revenue that month was NT$511.86 billion (about US$15.62 billion). That was 54.65% higher than a year earlier and 0.57% lower than in August.

Revenue for the first nine months of 2026 reached NT$3,898.73 billion (about US$118.95 billion), up 41.11% from the same period a year earlier. In its report, the company said the increase was due to higher demand for advanced-process products.

Those sales figures cover a month that ended weeks before the U.S. midterm elections. The post-election policy uncertainty Focus Taiwan described arose after the September report. How much of TSMC’s business that uncertainty touches is not known.
