Texas Instruments outlook tops estimates before Asia opens
The US analog chipmaker's upbeat outlook offered a demand signal from outside memory and AI as Asian markets prepared to open on Oct 22.
Texas Instruments expects next-quarter sales to beat what analysts had projected, Reuters and Bloomberg reported. The outlook came after the US market closed on Oct 21, so it was known before Seoul and Tokyo opened on Oct 22.
TI makes analog chips, Reuters noted. These chips handle real-world signals such as power and voltage, not data storage or AI computing. Bloomberg attributed the stronger outlook to a pickup in demand. TI has not given further detail.
A signal from outside memory and AI
Most recent chip news has centered on memory and AI. Here, demand improved at a maker of more basic components.
TI shares closed the Oct 21 regular session at US$284.65, up 2.47%. The PHLX Semiconductor Index (SOX), a gauge of US-listed chip stocks, closed that day at 11,505.56, up 1.97%. Both moves came before the outlook was released, so neither reflects it.
Asian markets fell the next day
Seoul’s KOSPI closed at 5,533.77 on Oct 22, down 3.52%. Tokyo’s Nikkei 225 ended that day at 62,907.84, down 2.65%. Neither decline has been linked to TI’s outlook. The time gap between Asian and US closes means news from a US evening reaches Asia before its next open.
In Taipei, the TAIEX closed Oct 21 at 46,887.77, a gain of 1.28%. That close also came before the outlook.
