Micron moves toward a quarterly bonus linked to its profits
Micron plans to pay staff a profit-linked bonus each quarter, two outlets reported, as bonus pay becomes an issue at memory makers in Taiwan and South Korea.
Micron Technology plans to give its employees a bonus every quarter that is linked to how much the company earns, Reuters reported on Oct 22. BusinessKorea also reported the quarterly bonus plan that day. Neither outlet said how large the payments would be, which staff would qualify or when the first one would be paid.
The reports came two days after Pacific Tape covered plans by Micron’s union in Taiwan for a one-day walkout over bonus pay. Neither outlet connected the new plan to that dispute. Also on Oct 22, BusinessKorea reported that a union at Samsung Electronics is pressing for relief over gaps in bonus pay. How memory makers share their gains with workers is now an issue in more than one country for investors who hold Micron alongside Samsung and SK hynix.
A profit pool far larger than a year ago
A profit-linked bonus at Micron would rest on very large earnings. In the fiscal fourth quarter, which ended Sept. 3, operating profit was US$43.751 billion. That was up 31.31% from the quarter before and 1,097.35% from a year earlier, and the highest in at least six quarters. Revenue rose 30.81% from the prior quarter to US$54.229 billion, and net income came to US$37.701 billion.
In the fiscal fourth quarter of 2025, which ended Aug. 28, 2025, Micron earned operating profit of US$3.654 billion on revenue of US$11.315 billion.
The stock before the reports
Micron finished the Oct 21 session on Nasdaq at US$913.67, a gain of 1.96%, before either report appeared. That gain left the shares 16.74% lower than on Oct 1.
