Samsung hosts wireless summit on a day its shares fell 9.5%

Samsung Electronics held its annual wireless network meeting in Silicon Valley on the same day its Seoul-listed stock suffered a steep market-wide selloff.

Samsung Electronics gathered telecom partners from around the world for the Silicon Valley Future Wireless Summit 2026 on Oct 15, local time, at the Samsung Research America campus in Mountain View, California. The company announced the meeting on its Samsung Newsroom site. It followed a Partner Day the company had held at the same site.

Yonhap reported that the talks with partners focused on where next-generation networks are heading. Samsung has not released any deals, customer names or spending figures tied to the event.

Third-quarter profit filed a week earlier

The summit came a week after Samsung filed preliminary consolidated third-quarter results on Oct 8. They put operating profit at 107.4 trillion won on revenue of 195 trillion won. Operating profit was up 20.01% from the second quarter and the highest in at least six quarters.

Summit day brought a 7.57% index drop

On Oct 15 the KOSPI, Korea’s main index, dropped 7.57% to 5,554.22. Across all KOSPI shares, foreign investors’ net selling that day came to 3.77 trillion won (about US$2.80 billion). Neither Samsung nor Yonhap linked the meeting to the share price, and the slide hit the whole market. On Oct 16 the KOSPI rose 2.05% to 5,668.05, and foreign investors turned to net purchases of 354.3 billion won (about US$266 million) market-wide.

Samsung’s size makes its moves hard to separate from the index. On Oct 16 its market value was about 1,259.9 trillion won, or 29.22% of the KOSPI 200’s total market value. Two chip stocks and foreign money explain much of why the KOSPI swings so sharply.

Results call and buyback on the calendar

Samsung is scheduled to hold a conference call on its third-quarter results on Oct 29 at 10:00 KST. The buyback period for the share repurchase it decided on Aug 21 runs to Nov 21. That repurchase covers 53,285,968 common shares valued at 15.0 trillion won, for employee stock compensation.
